Book Review
I love back-to-school time. Not just because the little one will now be out of the house for a good 6 hours, but also because the geek in me loves new books, backpacks, stationary, uniforms and the whole shebang! Little ones, however, may not share in this excitement, especially if it’s there first time.
That’s where Yasmine’s Belly Button comes in!
A new book by Asma Hussein, this tale is sure to delight little ones. The dearth of diverse books in children’s literature is an issue for lots of parents. Hussein’s book helps with this need without being preachy. As a Muslim author, she has just the right touch of culture in the book. Little ones can see different skin and hair colors among the kids pictured, and spot mommies in hijab – sights they’re used to seeing only in real-life, and not in books.
Other than that, the book handles a topic that every kid can relate to – first day of school jitters – in an amusing and playful style. The fun fonts and illustrations remind me of my own Judy Blume afternoons as a kid.
Now, I personally wouldn’t choose to discuss my daughter’s time in my tummy with her, but Hussein handles the topic like a pro, making the book a perfect way to start that conversation! And the idea of the belly button as a sign of the forever love between a mother and her child is heartwarming.
I read the book to my 4-year old, and the first thing she pointed out when reading the title was:
“I have a friend called Yasmine!” Finally a book with familiar names!
She gave it a big thumbs-up, summing it up as a ‘good and funny’ book.
The book is available for purchase on the publisher’s website: Ruqaya’s Bookshelf
